You know how you always need to have someone ahead of you in life in order to continue to be a carnivorous learner? Well I do this in a number of ways. One of them is by surrounding myself with great people. For me personally, one of those people has been Will Mancini.
The mystery in a nutshell is this: Christ is in you, so therefore you can look forward to sharing in God's glory. It's that simple. That is the substance of our message. We preach Christ (Col. 1:27 MSG).
Perhaps these words I prayed recently during this season of Lent will spur you on to pray something similar:
This past weekend a man whom I know and recently baptized told me through a lens of tears that his son died of an apparent suicide while in prison. Now when someone shares with you this kind of news with that particular level of authenticity, the story has a way of having an influence on you. This is precisely the lifestyle of authenticity and grace that the New Testament describes as the very essence of the early church. For example listen to John “the beloved” who records Jesus’ words in John 15:17, where He commands us to love each other.
This is a guest post by Jared Johnson. He is Newbreak's Director of Student Ministries. He often confesses that his left foot is about 1 inch shorter than his right foot.
A few years ago I went to a National Youth Workers Convention. The convention was a training conference for leaders in youth ministry where I had the incredible opportunity to hear a man by the name of Harvey Carey speak. Yes, my first thought was that this was Harry Caray, the announcer of the Chicago Cubs who wore extremely oversized glasses and passed away many years ago. But this was not him. That would have been cool though...
So I arrived at the airport today, the day before the Thanksgiving holiday and the security line is long and ironically everyone is complaining! Me however… I’m just thankful. I’m thankful because my grandson Cody, who shares time between his mom in San Diego and his dad and mom in Austin, just so happened to be boarding the same flight and got to sit between his Noni and I! Now that’s a gift for any grandparent.
Can I actually change? Is it hopeless? Can I really become a better father, husband, pastor, leader, friend, or neighbor?
I often struggle with Scriptures like 2 Corinthians 5:17 that say “I am a new creation in Christ Jesus” or passages like Philippians 2:12 that add that we must “work out [our] salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who is at work in [us] to will and do according to his purposes”.
Mike and his wife Teresa began Newbreak Church with a core group of 13 people in 1986. Since that time, Newbreak Church in San Diego has grown into a multisite which has six campuses and nearly 3,000 people in attendance on an average weekend. Through his relevant and authentic style of preaching and equipping leaders, Pastor Mike encourages others to live and share their faith with humility and grace. Mike is passionate about his wife and kids, and sharing his faith whether it be at a local restaurant, or speaking internationally in places like Vietnam, South America, or Fiji. Mike would tell you that his other great love is surfing big waves!
