Things Influencing Me Right Now

August 26, 2014 · posted in Life, Lessons

You know how you always need to have someone ahead of you in life in order to continue to be a carnivorous learner? Well I do this in a number of ways. One of them is by surrounding myself with great people. For me personally, one of those people has been Will Mancini.

Stories That Influence

January 22, 2014 · posted in Life, Lessons

This past weekend a man whom I know and recently baptized told me through a lens of tears that his son died of an apparent suicide while in prison. Now when someone shares with you this kind of news with that particular level of authenticity, the story has a way of having an influence on you. This is precisely the lifestyle of authenticity and grace that the New Testament describes as the very essence of the early church. For example listen to John “the beloved” who records Jesus’ words in John 15:17, where He commands us to love each other.

Where Do You Go for Answers?

December 16, 2013 · posted in Life, Lessons

This is a guest post by Jared Johnson. He is Newbreak's Director of Student Ministries. He often confesses that his left foot is about 1 inch shorter than his right foot.

A few years ago I went to a National Youth Workers Convention. The convention was a training conference for leaders in youth ministry where I had the incredible opportunity to hear a man by the name of Harvey Carey speak. Yes, my first thought was that this was Harry Caray, the announcer of the Chicago Cubs who wore extremely oversized glasses and passed away many years ago. But this was not him. That would have been cool though...

What is Your “Why”?

October 30, 2013 · posted in Leadership, Lessons

In our last visit together we discussed Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely goals. When it comes to the relevant part of SMART goals, it must involve your true passion and an understanding of the “why!” If something compels me then I will be intrinsically motivated to sacrifice, work hard, and accomplish it with excellence. So let me give you an example from my own life to help illustrate this point. Here's how I understand my passion, or the “why” of me, and how it compels me.

What Are the Opposites of Our Broken Sinful Desires?

August 21, 2013 · posted in Lessons

What are the opposites of my broken sinful tendencies? I was reading Proverbs 11 and verse 27 struck me with a new urgency. "Whoever seeks good finds favor, but evil comes to one who searches for it." As I pondered I reflected on the famous "7 Deadly Sins" that flow from elsewhere. If you aren't familiar with them, they are as follows:  Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride.

Lessons from ‘Lead Like Jesus’ - Part 2

June 7, 2013 · posted in Leadership, Lessons

Ken Blanchard makes the following statement in Lead Like Jesus: “Leadership is not about power. It's not about control; it's about helping people live according to the vision.”

This is why “Jesus Style” leaders, by definition, are always surrounded by followers who are willing to sacrifice for them.

Lessons from ‘Lead Like Jesus’

May 30, 2013 · posted in Leadership, Lessons

I am continuing to mine the incredible depths of Lead Like Jesus by Ken Blanchard. Over the next few weeks I want to share different things that the Lord speaks into me in hopes that they might be insightful to you as well.

In one section, Ken writes the following: “The "tyranny of the or" suggests that you, as a leader, have to choose results or people. Yet Jesus modeled a "both/and" point of view.”

A Conversation That Changed Me

May 23, 2013 · posted in Life, Lessons

Can I actually change? Is it hopeless? Can I really become a better father, husband, pastor, leader, friend, or neighbor?

I often struggle with Scriptures like 2 Corinthians 5:17 that say “I am a new creation in Christ Jesus” or passages like Philippians 2:12 that add that we must “work out [our] salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who is at work in [us] to will and do according to his purposes”.
