Many leaders don’t know how to make goals truly accomplishable in a certain period of time largely because they’ve just never been taught. It’s not that they don’t want to be successful. It’s just that they’ve never been taught how. With my church staff, we practice making our goals SMART. Here's what I mean...
I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Pastor Duane Flewelling for over 15 years at this point. When Newbreak Church was a plant in Tierrasanta, my life group met at Pastor Duane and Erin’s home for a few years. Needless to say I know him pretty well! While there are many things I’ve learned about leadership from Duane, here are three.
This is a guest post by Darrel Larson. He is Newbreak's Outreach Pastor and the Scripps Mesa Campus Pastor. He is also the founder of Give Clean Water, a non-profit seeking to provide clean water to every person on earth who needs it.
Do you need more tools for ministry at your church?
Over the years Newbreak Church has increasingly become a resource to other leaders accross the US and around the world. It’s humbling and exciting to see leaders grow and develop in part by “picking our brains” and using the various tools we have developed. I often reflect on the importance of this from a church planters perspective because they have difficulty accessing more sophisticated models, tools, and mentors often because of finances and even the limitations of their networks.
What are the opposites of my broken sinful tendencies? I was reading Proverbs 11 and verse 27 struck me with a new urgency. "Whoever seeks good finds favor, but evil comes to one who searches for it." As I pondered I reflected on the famous "7 Deadly Sins" that flow from elsewhere. If you aren't familiar with them, they are as follows: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride.
I have the incredible privilege of meeting with leaders who shake the planet for Jesus on a continual basis. One of those leaders is Mike Meeks who pastors a multi-site church in San Diego named Eastlake Church. While I’ve learned many things from Mike, I’d like to share just three things which impacted my life and will perhaps be of benefit to yours.
Recently someone asked me how I stay fresh and changing over all these years of being an active leader. One of the most consistent and quick ways I stay fresh is by reading blogs. Below are a few of the most influential in my life right now:
Mike and his wife Teresa began Newbreak Church with a core group of 13 people in 1986. Since that time, Newbreak Church in San Diego has grown into a multisite which has six campuses and nearly 3,000 people in attendance on an average weekend. Through his relevant and authentic style of preaching and equipping leaders, Pastor Mike encourages others to live and share their faith with humility and grace. Mike is passionate about his wife and kids, and sharing his faith whether it be at a local restaurant, or speaking internationally in places like Vietnam, South America, or Fiji. Mike would tell you that his other great love is surfing big waves!
